Steampunk Aviator Cap - The Stargazer by SewDesuNe Steampunk Aviator Cap - The Stargazer by SewDesuNe
:bulletpurple: BLOG :bulletred: ETSY :bulletgreen: TUMBLR :bulletred: FACEBOOK :bulletpurple:

I recently did a group of aviator caps made from faux suede in about 13 different colors. With all of the fabric used up to make custom hats for several awesome customers, I used up the scraps to make a few more, patchwork style >w<

I went all out and did rabbit ears and a visor since I had enough fabric to afford it. While the reason for the hat is something akin to frugality, the inspiration was actually one of my favorite fairy tales, called Allerleirauh, The Princess in Disguise, Thousandfurs, and other similar titles. It's about a princess that is forced to marry her father, and asks for 3 special dresses and one cloak made from fur from all the animals in the forest to stall the action. When she actually receives them, she runs away, disguised in the cloak, and uses the dresses to gain the attention of and marry another king.

The story is so classic that many different versions of it are out there, which only made me more excited about the idea of a steampunk version. I put together a little story below, if you'll pardon me indulging myself! ♥

:halfmoon: Star + Dangles Bullet (Pink) - F2U! The Stargazer Star + Dangles Bullet (Pink) - F2U! :halfmoon:

Once upon a time there was a daughter of a successful solicitor, who loved studying the stars and hoped to one day become an astronomer. Her father, who sought to increase his standing and wealth, arranged a marriage between his daughter and an incredibly rich aristocrat, known for his boorishness, but also for his frivolous spending and ostentatiousness.

To stall her father, the daughter insisted that 4 garments be made for her before she considered herself good enough for the aristocrat: a dress that glowed like the moon, a dress that shone like the sun, a dress that glittered like the stars, and a coat and cap made of pelts of every animal in the forest. The solicitor scoured every tailor in the city, and managed to make the first dress in 1 month, the second in 3 months, the third in 5 months, and the coat in 6 months.

Seeing that her plan failed, the daughter gathered her dresses and donned the coat of many pelts and ran away into the night. She stopped at the house of the aristocrat, where she met one of the servants and became a part of the cooking team.

From the safety of the kitchen, the girl spied on the aristocrat, finding all the rumors about his belligerent nature to be true. While staying there, she discovered he collected luxuries from all over the world just to show off his wealth. Including several suits of samurai armor, African tribal masks, and an impressive hot air balloon kept stationed in his vast garden.

The aristocrat held several lavish costume parties throughout the year. At the first, the girl wore the dress that glowed like the moon. She caught the aristocrat’s attention, who knew from the solicitor that he should be expecting his bride. He asked the girl if she was the bride he arranged for. With every question she responded coyly, never giving him the truth and leading him on to believe she was his bride-to-be.

When the clock struck midnight and everyone removed their masks, the girl ran off, adding to her mystery. She escaped back to the kitchen where she joined the rest of the cooks in her coat of patchwork pelts.

During the second costume party, the girl wore the dress that shone like the sun. Again she coyly teased the aristocrat, hinted that she would reveal herself at the next party, and fled before the mask unveiling. That night in the kitchen, she heard the laments of a fellow scullery maid who proclaimed her love for the aristocrat. The girl could hardly believe her ears, but continued her work as one of the group nonetheless.

For the third costume party, the girl spied on the aristocrat, who she could tell was getting restless in waiting for his bride-to-be. When the time felt ripe, she took her last dress, the one that glittered like stars, and gave it to the scullery maid, advising her to attend the party. The maid gratefully accepted and danced the night away with the aristocrat.

As the partiers were distracted, the girl spent the evening sneaking out to the garden and preparing the massive hot air balloon. As the clock struck midnight and partiers removed their masks, the stargazer let slip the ropes and sailed off into the glittering night sky, starting her own adventure where she could finally live amongst the stars.
